This page will contain some really great things that I have come across in using a computer and/or the internet. My full time job for the last 36 years has been in information technology. Over that time I have seen a lot of changes. There are many new things, in my opinion, that are making computers and the internet better on a daily basis, so I thought I would pass them on to you.
If you have read the information on RSS readers in this website or any where else, you know that reading RSS feeds can give you access to a lot of information very quickly. To process RSS it takes specialized software. I use some freeware called RSS Xpress for my RSS feeds. The software does everything that I want it too, is free, and allows searching. A lot of RSS software doesn't allow the search feature, which I use more often than you would first think. There are other freeware packages you can try including: Abilon is a FREE RSS reader and can be downloaded here. There is another FREE reader called Feedreader 2.5 Alpha 610 that can be downloaded by clicking here. Again, I haven't tried these freeware versions, but the price is right!!!
If you have an e-mail address, undoubtably you get spam. If you use your e-mail address to purchase something or sign-up for something, or even posting on the chatboard, you can almost count on somebody using it to send you unsolicited mail! There is an answer to this problem and it is free . There is a website that offers you a disposable e-mail addresses that can by used from 1 to 20 times each (you decide) before it expires. This means that you can give an e-mail address to a store or post it on the chat board and after a fixed number of people send something to you using it, it expires. No more spam. It is super easy, free, and it makes great sense. Check it out at SpamGourmet .
Spam is just one big pain in the rear for most P.C. users. You find yourself manually going through all the mail and deleting the unwanted junk. You maybe also trying to solve the problem by setting up rules in your mail program to try to handle the spam. Both are time consuming and seem never to work as you would like. There is a great answer, it is called K9. This software actually learns what is spam, becoming more accurate on a daily basis. I have been using it for several months now and it is almost 99% effective in screening out spam mail. It is simple to implement and again it is FREE. Straight out of the installation, it was already about 90% accurate in spam identification. I removed all of my attempted rules in Outlook, and replaced it with just one simple one. Give K9 a try, you won't be disappointed. This is great software by Robin Keir.
There is a browser that Internet Explorer should be. In fact, the new browser uses the basic functionality of I.E., but goes way beyond I.E. capabilities. This is a tabbed browser that allows you to have mulitiple pages up simultaneously in a single window. You literally click on a different tab, to change pages. It has translation capability, built in search engine and literally to many features for me to mention. I develop internet applications for a living, and I have been using the Avant Browser for over a year as my browser of choice. Once again, this software is FREE. This is probably the oldest and best freeware program in the world. I have been using it to view pictures and do basic graphic manipulations for many, many years. The software is call IRFANVIEW, and it is again FREE. It is feature rich and should be in everyones P.C. toolbox. The software is written by Irfan Skiljan and can be downloaded at here.
